Some 10,000 young people born every year never complete any education or training beyond basic schooling – many because they drop out of vocational training. Reducing this number is essential if Denmark is to avoid a shortage of skilled labour and prevent large-scale marginalisation of young people in relation to the labour market and to society in general. To succeed it is necessary for the vocational colleges to adopt several approaches, to ensure that the overall priorities are in place and to base the measures instituted on close cooperation between the college and the local community – notably the youth education counselling services, various local government services, other places of education/training and companies.
