Region Midtjylland has asked AKF (the Danish Institute of Governmental Research) to look into patterns of education within the region. Charting the progress of young people from elementary and secondary school to higher education is of interest, not only concerning future development of the region, but also concerning the chances of citizens finding a job and taking part in the life of the community in general.

Far more young people living in the “university municipalities” commence courses of higher secondary education than do those from elsewhere in the region. A large number of young people not living in the “university municipalities” move away from where they grew up, when they begin courses of higher education. Quite a few young people choose to stay and finish both intermediate courses and vocational courses.

Young people with no education beyond basic schooling generally fare poorly on the job market, especially young people from “university municipalities” where there are often other problems than unemployment, for instance personal problems in the home.
