Parts of Storstrøm County have suffered from high unemployment for many years. On this basis, developments in recent years have been very positive. The unemployment rate has dropped significantly and is now on level with the rest of Denmark. Projections suggest that there will be a shortage of (qualified) labour. Despite these improvements, there are still very great challenges. Storstrøm County has not benefited from the rapid growth in knowledge-based enterprises experienced elsewhere in Denmark. A shortage of labour requires initiatives to increase the occupational rate – especially for people with a higher education. The labour market in Storstrøm County continues to be divided into two: the Falster and Zealand regions, which experience growth from the Greater Copenhagen Area, and the Lolland region, which is too far away from the capital city for commuters.
