History

AKF was founded in April 1975 in continuation of the Danish municipal reform of 1970. The foundation took place on the initiative of the municipal organisations and after discussions with research councils, ministries and universities. The purpose of the institute was - and still is - to carry out social science research and general method and knowledge development of relevance to the public sector, especially counties and municipalities.

Today, AKF is a leading Danish social science research institute that delivers research in order to improve the public regulation and services with the main emphasis on welfare issues in municipalities and regions.

AKF is unique in the sense that no other independent research environment in Denmark entirely and continuously aims its activities at improving public activities at all levels - national, regional and municipal. At the same time, AKF's research is divided among a wide range of areas so that results and methods can be transferred from one area to another. AKF researches into design, implementation, organisation and evaluation of public policy and practice.
